Review

This review applies to version 5.0 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

MySQL Workbench is the next generation of database visual modeling tools for the MySQL database server. With the Workbench you can design your database using the Crows-Foot ERD notation, creating entities and relations, specify cardinality and rules. You can import DBDesigner 4 model files, since we are talking of the same development team that has moved to another project. You can also perform reverse engineering from a MySQL script (even a phpMyAdmin dump works like a charm!).
There are two editions of this tool, the Community (OSS) version and the Standard Edition (SE), with a paid annual subscription. Of course, in the paid version you get more features that will help you to increase your productivity, like performing direct database forward and reverse engineering, direct model printing (without export), more formats to export, select a different language for diagram notation, and many more.
If you already use DBDesigner 4, you will particularly miss the reverse engineering feature, what comes to the rest, you will be fine.
Advantages
  • A great increase of productivity is achieved with this tool, user-friendly and simple, yet powerful.
Disadvantages
  • You will miss some good features available in the Standard Edition.
  • Needs .NET Framework 2 installed.
